Negombo on the country’s western coast is a popular diving destination on account of twelve exceptional dive sites. Divers are treated to underwater landscapes ranging from pristine reefs full of fish to small rocky boulder strewn reefs. The wrecks of a WWII fighter aircraft and a 50 year old shipwreck now thriving marine colonies, are popular dive sites. The furthest dive spot the Third Reef offers clear blue water, excellent visibility and a diverse range of marine life.

Do a Jeep Safari in Wilpattu National Park

In the north western coastal lowlands of Sri Lanka Wilpattu national park is the largest and one of the country’s earliest national parks. A unique feature here are 60 rainwater filled sand rimmed depressions or willus. The flora of the park ranges from salt grass to low scrub monsoon forests with tall emergents. The fauna comprises of 31 species of mammals among which are elephants and leopards, a whole range of water birds, and reptiles.

Thereafter proceed from Wilpattu to Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura currently the capital of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, was the capital of the country’s first established kingdom from 4th century BCE to 1017. The remains of ancient Anuradhapura now confined to an area of 40 square km comprises of a range of antiquities among which is the country’s first large stupa, the world’s oldest Bodhi tree, monastic complexes and ancient irrigation infrastructure still in excellent working condition after some modifications.

Anuradhapura to Mihintale.

Just 16km off the sacred city of Anuradhapura lies the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as the stone carvings and unending stairways proclaim a legacy which hinges the philosophy sermoned by Buddha – ‘The Awakened One’. This is the holy land which sheltered the first Buddhist sermon by Arahath Mahinda to King Devanampiya Thissa, when the Poson full moon brightened a forest used by the king himself for hunting. Walk passing a massive cooling fountain and head towards the renowned staircase of the temple. Feel the coolness of granite slabs as you shift from the ruins of a hospital to Kantaka Stupa built in 1st century B.C. enriched with magical hands of the Sri Lankan stone carver. Step into the courtyard and towards its left sitting calm, is the refractory. However, the highlights of the sacred land are Maha Seya – the main dagoba – and Aradana Gala, the peak of the rock assuring breathtaking viewpoints of the Kingdom of Lakes,Anuradhapura.

Breakfast at Hotel & thereafter proceed from Sigiriya to Habarana and do an exciting one hour Elephant back safari on the lake bund of Habarana

Thereafter proceed to Minneriya.

Do a safari of the Minneriya National Park by jeep.

Minneriya is the site of a National Park in the catchment of the Minneriya reservoir constructed in the 3rd century. It is famous for its elephant gathering during the dry season, an event identified as the country’s largest seasonally recurring wildlife phenomenon. July to October is the best time to observe this event. Other park denizens include 26 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 25 species of reptiles, nine species of amphibians, 26 species of fish and 75 species of butterflies.

Day 05

Sigiriya – Habarana – Sigiriya

Breakfast at Hotel & thereafter proceed from Sigiriya to Hiriwaduna Village

Trek through the archetypal Sri Lankan Typical village. The trek begins with an awesome walk along a bund of a Wewa or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of early morning or an evening activity. The amazing birdlife, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake.

Thereafter proceed from Hiriwaduna Village to Sigiriya

One of the key archaeological sites in the cultural triangle, Sigiriya is a vast archaeological site dating from the 5th century. However it has been inhabited since pre historic times. The main attraction is the 80 meter granite rock with frescos of heavenly maidens and archaeological remains on top. The base of the rock is equally interesting with water and boulder gardens, a moat and old city walls.  The onsite modern museum is the best place to start.

Sigiriya – Dambulla – Matale – Kandy

 Breakfast at Hotel & thereafter proceed from Sigiriya to Dambulla

Dambulla Rock Cave temple which was built by king Walagambahu in the 1st century B.C.  and it is  a  World  Heritage Site.  It is the most impressive of  Sri Lanka’s cave temples.  The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings is the largest area of paintings found in the world.  It contains over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock and spanning 14 meters.

Thereafter proceed from Dambulla to Matale

Visit a spice garden in Matale to see different spices for which Sri Lanka is famous for. Here, clients could see different spices and how some of these spices are grown and processed.

There after proceed from Matale to Kandy

Located in the central hills, Kandy was the capital of the country’s last kingdom. Among the many places of historical, religious, cultural and ecological significance is the Temple of the Tooth where the Buddha’s tooth relic is enshrined, the 200-year-old Kandy Lake, remains of the 700 year old royal palace, a royal forest reserve, several pieces of 18th and 19th century colonial architecture, historic Buddhist and Hindu temples, the country’s largest botanic garden and the tea museum in the Hantane hills.

Kandy – Kithulgala – Tea Plantation – Nuwara Eliya

Kitulgala 80 km east of Colombo is one of the wettest places in the country because it gets rain from two monsoons. The 6.5 km boulder strewn stretch of the Kelani River here offers five grade two and three rapids making it one of the premier destinations for white water rafting in the country. Kitulgala Forest Reserve is a popular birding destination as endemic species like the orange billed babbler, chestnut backed owlet, green billed coucal, spur fowl and the spot winged thrush can be easily spotted here.

There after proceed to Nuwara Eliya via visiting a tea plantation

At an altitude of 1,868 meters Nuwara Eliya has a subtropical highland climate. When combined with a mean annual temperature of 16 degrees C it has the best conditions to host a variety of flowering plants, vertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, trees, shrubs, mosses and ferns making it an environment hotspot. Pidurutalagala at 2524 meters above sea level the country’s highest mountain peak looms over the town. The mountain is the catchment of some of the country’s major river systems. Nuwara Eliya is also famous for its tea plantations.

Nuwara Eliya – Horton Plains – Nuwara Eliya

Horton Plains National Park is the highest plateau in the country. It is also a popular nature trekking site. Its montane grasslands and cloud forests is home to some 750 species of plants of 20 families, 24 species of mammals among which are leopard, Sri Lankan sambur deer, the purple faced langur, wild boar and 87 species of birds of which 21 are endemic to Sri Lanka and four are found only in Horton Plains. A 700-meter escarpment known as World’s End and Bakers Falls are popular attractions.

Believed to be appeared in Sri Lanka about 500,000 B.C a few objects been discovered from balangoda area that dates back to the subsequent pathologic culture of the second stone age period. The only surviving traces of the presence of Mesolithic man, modern mans last link to the Stone Age are a few stone and bone implements. The group that practiced stone working are called the balangoda cultures.

Sinharaja – Mirissa

Covering an area of 8,864 ha ranging in altitude from 300 to 1,170 meters, Sinharaja is the last remaining relatively undisturbed patch of humid tropical evergreen forest in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO Heritage Site has some 139 species of endemic flora, 19 species of endemic avifauna and threatened and endangered endemic mammals such as leopard, Indian elephant and purple faced langur among other species. The forest has several hiking trails that offers access to waterfalls, streams and mountain peaks.

Rise early morning and leave for Mirissa, a small sandy tropical beach village which boasts some of Sri Lanka’s most stunning sunsets and sunrises. It is also on the worlds ‘Top Hot Spots’ for Sperm and Blue whale sightings. In the warm Indian Ocean you can see Blue whales, Sperm whales, Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins. Take the boat from the fishery harbour out to sea. Blue Whales in concentrations not seen elsewhere in the world would be the highlight. After seeing the blue whales, your naturalist will take you further out to sea to look for sperm whales.

Galle – Kosgoda – Colombo

Galle was once the chief port of Ceylon. It is still well known for hand-made lace. Visit the Galle Fort (spanning 90 acres) which has been originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. This is a World Heritage Site.

Thereafter Visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery

Both locals and international volunteers battling it out for ”Sea Turtles’ Sake” is a common sight at Kosgoda. This vibrant tourist destination sitting calm along the Southern coast of Sri Lanka – apart from its traditional industries of fisheries and cinnamon cultivation – was later recognized by the Wildlife Protection Society who studded the region with a Sea Turtle Conservation Project which operates on a formidable scale today. Indirectly, this has become a watering hole of flipper & shell enthusiasts!

    Negombo on the country’s western coast is a popular diving destination on account of twelve exceptional dive sites. Divers are treated to underwater landscapes ranging from pristine reefs full of fish to small rocky boulder strewn reefs. The wrecks of a WWII fighter aircraft and a 50 year old shipwreck now thriving marine colonies, are popular dive sites. The furthest dive spot the Third Reef offers clear blue water, excellent visibility and a diverse range of marine life.

    Do a Jeep Safari in Wilpattu National Park

    In the north western coastal lowlands of Sri Lanka Wilpattu national park is the largest and one of the country’s earliest national parks. A unique feature here are 60 rainwater filled sand rimmed depressions or willus. The flora of the park ranges from salt grass to low scrub monsoon forests with tall emergents. The fauna comprises of 31 species of mammals among which are elephants and leopards, a whole range of water birds, and reptiles.

    Thereafter proceed from Wilpattu to Anuradhapura

    Anuradhapura currently the capital of Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, was the capital of the country’s first established kingdom from 4th century BCE to 1017. The remains of ancient Anuradhapura now confined to an area of 40 square km comprises of a range of antiquities among which is the country’s first large stupa, the world’s oldest Bodhi tree, monastic complexes and ancient irrigation infrastructure still in excellent working condition after some modifications.

    Anuradhapura to Mihintale.

    Just 16km off the sacred city of Anuradhapura lies the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka as the stone carvings and unending stairways proclaim a legacy which hinges the philosophy sermoned by Buddha – ‘The Awakened One’. This is the holy land which sheltered the first Buddhist sermon by Arahath Mahinda to King Devanampiya Thissa, when the Poson full moon brightened a forest used by the king himself for hunting. Walk passing a massive cooling fountain and head towards the renowned staircase of the temple. Feel the coolness of granite slabs as you shift from the ruins of a hospital to Kantaka Stupa built in 1st century B.C. enriched with magical hands of the Sri Lankan stone carver. Step into the courtyard and towards its left sitting calm, is the refractory. However, the highlights of the sacred land are Maha Seya – the main dagoba – and Aradana Gala, the peak of the rock assuring breathtaking viewpoints of the Kingdom of Lakes,Anuradhapura.

    Minneriya is the site of a National Park in the catchment of the Minneriya reservoir constructed in the 3rd century. It is famous for its elephant gathering during the dry season, an event identified as the country’s largest seasonally recurring wildlife phenomenon. July to October is the best time to observe this event. Other park denizens include 26 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 25 species of reptiles, nine species of amphibians, 26 species of fish and 75 species of butterflies.

    Sigiriya – Habarana – Sigiriya

    Trek through the archetypal Sri Lankan Typical village. The trek begins with an awesome walk along a bund of a Wewa or manmade reservoir. The reservoir itself, the surrounding scrub jungle, marshland and village are a hive of early morning or an evening activity. The amazing birdlife, butterflies and possible sightings of crocodile only add to the charm of seeing the villagers as they go about their early morning tasks of fishing, or washing clothes at the periphery of the lake.

    Thereafter proceed from Hiriwaduna Village to Sigiriya

    One of the key archaeological sites in the cultural triangle, Sigiriya is a vast archaeological site dating from the 5th century. However it has been inhabited since pre historic times. The main attraction is the 80 meter granite rock with frescos of heavenly maidens and archaeological remains on top. The base of the rock is equally interesting with water and boulder gardens, a moat and old city walls.  The onsite modern museum is the best place to start.

    Sigiriya – Dambulla – Matale – Kandy

    Dambulla Rock Cave temple which was built by king Walagambahu in the 1st century B.C.  and it is  a  World  Heritage Site.  It is the most impressive of  Sri Lanka’s cave temples.  The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and ceilings is the largest area of paintings found in the world.  It contains over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock and spanning 14 meters.

    Thereafter proceed from Dambulla to Matale

    Visit a spice garden in Matale to see different spices for which Sri Lanka is famous for. Here, clients could see different spices and how some of these spices are grown and processed.

    Located in the central hills, Kandy was the capital of the country’s last kingdom. Among the many places of historical, religious, cultural and ecological significance is the Temple of the Tooth where the Buddha’s tooth relic is enshrined, the 200-year-old Kandy Lake, remains of the 700 year old royal palace, a royal forest reserve, several pieces of 18th and 19th century colonial architecture, historic Buddhist and Hindu temples, the country’s largest botanic garden and the tea museum in the Hantane hills.

    Kitulgala 80 km east of Colombo is one of the wettest places in the country because it gets rain from two monsoons. The 6.5 km boulder strewn stretch of the Kelani River here offers five grade two and three rapids making it one of the premier destinations for white water rafting in the country. Kitulgala Forest Reserve is a popular birding destination as endemic species like the orange billed babbler, chestnut backed owlet, green billed coucal, spur fowl and the spot winged thrush can be easily spotted here.

    At an altitude of 1,868 meters Nuwara Eliya has a subtropical highland climate. When combined with a mean annual temperature of 16 degrees C it has the best conditions to host a variety of flowering plants, vertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, trees, shrubs, mosses and ferns making it an environment hotspot. Pidurutalagala at 2524 meters above sea level the country’s highest mountain peak looms over the town. The mountain is the catchment of some of the country’s major river systems. Nuwara Eliya is also famous for its tea plantations.

    Horton Plains National Park is the highest plateau in the country. It is also a popular nature trekking site.     Covering an area of 8,864 ha ranging in altitude from 300 to 1,170 meters, Sinharaja is the last remaining relatively undisturbed patch of humid tropical evergreen forest in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO Heritage Site has some 139 species of endemic flora, 19 species of endemic avifauna and threatened and endangered endemic mammals such as leopard, Indian elephant and purple faced langur among other species.     Mirissa – Galle

     Breakfast at Hotel & thereafter proceed to Galle en route take part in a exciting Mirissa whale watching experience

    Rise early morning and leave for Mirissa, a small sandy tropical beach village which boasts some of Sri Lanka’s most stunning sunsets and sunrises. It is also on the worlds ‘Top Hot Spots’ for Sperm and Blue whale sightings. In the warm Indian Ocean you can see Blue whales, Sperm whales, Common dolphins, Bottlenose dolphins, Spinner dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins. Take the boat from the fishery harbour out to sea. Blue Whales in concentrations not seen elsewhere in the world would be the highlight. After seeing the blue whales, your naturalist will take you further out to sea to look for sperm whales.

    Galle – Kosgoda – Colombo

    Breakfast at Hotel & thereafter proceed to Kosgoda en route do a Galle City tour

    Galle was once the chief port of Ceylon. It is still well known for hand-made lace. Visit the Galle Fort (spanning 90 acres) which has been originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. This is a World Heritage Site.

    Thereafter Visit Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery

    Both locals and international volunteers battling it out for ”Sea Turtles’ Sake” is a common sight at Kosgoda. This vibrant tourist destination sitting calm along the Southern coast of Sri Lanka – apart from its traditional industries of fisheries and cinnamon cultivation – was later recognized by the Wildlife Protection Society who studded the region with a Sea Turtle Conservation Project which operates on a formidable scale today. Indirectly, this has become a watering hole of flipper & shell enthusiasts!
